Psychoanalysis of our time and new technologies

On the third Friday of June 2015, at 7 p.m, the fourth panel discussion of the cycle „“Psychoanalysis of Our Time”“ was held at the Belgrade City Library, by now a traditional venue for the supporters of psychoanalysis and the Psychoanalytical Society of Serbia. This time, the theme was “Psychoanalysis and New Technologies”.

The topicality of the subject, the presence of modern technologies in everyday life and most of all, the curiosity about how innovations are seen from the perspective of psychoanalytic thought and practice attracted a large number of supporters of psychoanalysis as well as those interested in new technologies. Just like in the case of previous panel discussions, this time as well psychoanalysts have shown that their work and thinking go beyond their offices and couches to deal with absolutely everything that makes one’s life.

At the very start, instead of an introduction, was shown a clip from the movie “Birdman”, this year’s Academy Award winner. The clip describes the presence of modern technologies in the life of an ordinary man and their significance for each of us.

A panel discussion moderator, Vesna Brzev-Ćurčić first talked about the development of robots-toys for children and their significance for the psychological development of children. She pointed out the advantages and disadvantages with a special reference to their limiting children’s ability to develop abstract thinking and the capacity “to be alone”, possible provocation of guilt, but also the ability to keep up with what is inevitable in the development of modern society.

The following speakers discussed psychoanalysis and new technologies:
Vojislav Ćurčić, Marina Ivanović, Danijela Galović i Vesna Brzev-Ćurčić as a moderator.

Vojislav Ćurčić spoke about the presence of gadgets and their symbolic importance for people. He then discussed a phenomenon of the Internet expansion with all its advantages and disadvantages. He also drew attention to the potential Internet addiction, narcissistic background of certain phenomena, loneliness, virtual reality but also sometimes it being the way of overcoming or counterbalancing some of the mental problems. He also spoke about the importance and meaning of the use of social networks.

Danijela Galović spoke about computer games, their accompanying effects, lonely players, group games, avatars, “the other life” and the psychoanalytic view of this phenomenon. The possibility of creating oneself in an idealized way, the unpunished manifestation of aggression through games, the opportunity to compete and the feeling of omnipotence are just some of the existing psychological phenomena.

Marina Ivanović spoke about the use of Skype in the analysis of persons who live outside the analyst’s place of living. She pointed out that occasional face-to-face meetings with the analyst were necessary so that the atmosphere of the genuine meeting and the analytical setting itself could be preserved. Skype analysis is inevitable in some situations, with awareness of its range and limitations. She also mentioned a vignette as an illustration of what, from her extensive experience, she presented as a perception of the use of modern technologies in clinical practice.

At the end of the panel discussion, Jasminka Šuljagić, president of the Psychoanalytical Society of Serbia, closed the cycle, thanked everyone who participated and announced the Society’s intention to organize new meetings with the audience.

The fourth panel discussion – “Psychoanalysis and New Technologies”

The panel will address the issues of the influence of modern technology on man’s inner world, problems of mental development, formation of symbolic thinking, leaving room for “being alone”, the meaning of perception, images and presentations of ourselves that we communicate to others as well as of predominantly thinking about self-presentation instead of enjoying real life.

In addition, the panel discussion will deal with the psychological meaning of gadgets, dynamics of interpersonal relationships and the possibilities that modern technologies provide for new forms of psychotherapeutic interventions.

Furthermore, speakers will discuss possible misuse of modern technologies and addiction to them, with special reference to disorders in young people and the psychoanalytic understanding of these disorders and interventions.

Vojislav Ćurčić, the PSS psychoanalyst, Marina Ivanović, the PSS psychoanalyst and Danijela Galović, the PSS candidate, will take part in the panel discussion. The PSS training psychoanalyst Vesna Brzev-Ćurčić will moderate the panel.

“Psychoanalysis and Sociocultural Field” as the subject of exchange of opinions

The third Friday in the month, 7 p.m. and the Belgrade City Library have by now become usual time and place of gathering of Belgrade audience interested in psychoanalysis. This spring, the Psychoanalytical Society of Serbia (PSS), in cooperation with the Belgrade City Library, is organizing a cycle of lectures and panel discussions “Psychoanalysis of Our Time”.

The April panel discussion held on April 17, 2015 brought several surprises. The psychoanalysis was discussed not only as a clinical discipline, as customary, but also as a means for understanding the world we live in. The psychoanalytic concepts have not only affected and thoroughly changed that world, but have become an important determinant in the consideration of its phenomena and trends. The selection of participants, the guest lecture of a renowned Parisian psychoanalyst, the idea of a possibility and necessity of a dialogue outside the circle of psychoanalysts themselves and discussion among participants – contributed to the special atmosphere of this panel discussion.

Marilia Aisenstein (Marilia Aisenstein), a training analyst of the Paris Psychoanalytical Society (SPP) (SPP) spoke about the revolution in civilization which is represented by the Freud’s work and reminded us of Freud’s texts “Thoughts for the times on war and death“ written exactly 100 years ago (in 1915) and “Why war“ from 1933. The second part of the lecture, with the introductory question – What have been the current world news since January – dealt with the essential determinants of modern times: disintegration of the Superego, cancellation of the father and returning to religions and nationalisms.

Marilia Aisenstein on the essential determinants of modern times

In front of a large audience – participants of the panel discussion “Psychoanalysis and Sociocultural Field”: Milica Martinović, Marilia Aisenstein, Jasminka Šuljagić, Teofil Pančić

Milica Martinović, Milica Martinović, a psychoanalyst of the Psychoanalytical Society of Serbia, brought up many interesting questions: does psychoanalysis lead to a specific view of the world; does it lose its critical power when adopted as a form of institutional knowledge; can it be argued that the project of “psychosocial studies” and psychoanalysis “outside the clinic” is a force – Eros that raises hopes that it is possible to overcome divisions into social and personal, that is, external and internal. Reflections on these and other questions were extremely inspiring for listening and discussion.

Teofil Pančić, a writer and a journalist, a columnist and a literary critic of the weekly “Vreme”, said that psychoanalytic concepts and interpretations were so present and pervading in contemporary culture and understanding of social processes that they were imperceptibly becoming part of the language and means for understanding social processes in the hands of non-psychoanalysts too. “Narcissism of small differences”, “repression”, “hysteria”… are some of the psychoanalytic concepts he used in his texts in an attempt to understand turbulent social processes in our country.

The panel discussion moderator, Jasminka Šuljagić, the PSS psychoanalyst and training analyst, recognized the proposition on the courage and critical potential of psychoanalysis in Freud’s time as a common thread of all presentations. The question of whether this was still its characteristic and whether this was exactly what made psychoanalysis not outdated but timeless – was further discussed.

Comments of the audience confirmed the need for the serious and professional tone of public panel discussions, and the entire event attracted media attention – a short interview with Marilia Aisenstein and the reporter’s coverage of the panel were aired on TV News 3 of the Radio Television of Serbia (RTS).
You can watch the coverage here.

The cycle “Psychoanalysis of Our Time” continues on 19 June at 7 p.m. in the same venue. The topic of the next, fourth, and last panel discussion of the cycle will be
“Psychoanalysis and New Technologies”..
The following will participate: Vesna Brzev-Ćurčić (moderator), the PSS training analyst, Marina Ivanović, the PSS analyst, Danijela Galović, a candidate and Vojislav Ćurčić, the PSS training analyst.

Third panel discussion – “Psychoanalysis and Sociocultural Field”

After great interest of the Belgrade audience in the panel discussions within the cycle “Psychoanalysis of Our Time” organized by the Psychoanalytical Society of Serbia in cooperation with the Belgrade City Library, another current topic i.e. the third round table is planned on the subject of:

PSYCHOANALYSIS AND SOCIOCULTURAL FIELD

The attendees will have an opportunity to find out if psychoanalysis is a hermetic discipline closed within its narrow professional framework, if it has ever been or if it is today. Where is its place in the world different from Freud’s 20th century, partly different because the psychoanalysis itself has changed it?

How do contemporary psychoanalysts see the time we live in, how do the trends of that time affect psychoanalytic theory and technique?

This panel discussion is also an exceptional opportunity for you to meet our guest Marilia Aisenstein (Marilia Aisenstein) a training analyst of the Paris Psychoanalytical Society (SPP), a European representative in the Board of the International Psychoanalytical Association, an author of a number of texts and publications on psychosomatics and a winner of the Bouvet Prize, and to listen to reflections of Milica Martinović, the PSS psychoanalyst, a versatile connoisseur of cultural history and psychoanalytic theory and author of many publications on that subject.

In addition, you will attend a new form of psychoanalytic dialogue: our guest is also Teofil Pančić, a writer and a journalist, a columnist and a literary critic of the weekly “Vreme”.

The moderator is Jasminka Šuljagić, a psychoanalyst and training analyst.

The panel discussion will be held in the Large Hall – Reading Room of the Arts Department of the Belgrade City Library,on April 17, 2015, at 7 p.m.

Following the development of theory, with clinical vignettes and personal experiences, the speakers will discuss the contemporary perceptions of early traumas and corporal punishment of children, healthy and pathological narcissism and importance of the relationship with a good enough parent.

Along with the PSS psychoanalysts, Mr. Jonathan Sklar, a renowned guest and training analyst of the British Psychoanalytical Society and chair of the Practice and Scientific Activities Committee in the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA) will participate in the panel discussion.
